Beta-phenyl-gamma-aminobutyric acid, better known as phenibut, is an anxiolytic and mood-enhancing drug developed in the Soviet Union. It was used by cosmonauts to help them perform better but today is prescribed across the post-Soviet world to treat anxiety, depression and alcoholism. In the West, it is unscheduled but not medically approved, it is marketed as a nootropic and can be bought online easily. Its molecular structure is the same as gamma-amino-butyric acid's but with an added phenyl ring that allows it to cross the blood-brain barrier more effectively. Pharmacologically it acts as a GABAb receptor agonist, as GHB does, however its effects at common doses are much different. Though technically a central nervous system depressant, phenibut can be described as stimulating. It greatly reduces anxiety and gives the user euphoria, leading to it having the nickname "party powder." At common doses it is not noticeably intoxicating. The drug has an exceptionally long duration of effect, lasting up to 16 hours. It is taken by mouth. A significant number of users report becoming addicted to the substance and report a physical withdrawal syndrome similar to that of antidepressants. I have used this drug every now and then for years, and have not had any problems with addiction. I have never felt the urge to binge on it as many do. Combined with caffeine, it greatly enhances productivity, and I use it as such in exceptional circumstances when I know I will have a stressful day. It is very effective and for this reason it is one of my favourite drugs. I fear it will be made illegal one day.
